RPG Explorer wins the 2025 National Open Science Award
December 18 2025Led by the SADAPT unit (AgroParisTech, INRAE, Paris-Saclay University), the RPG Explorer project was honored at the open science awards ceremony held on December 1, 2025, at Université Paris-Saclay, as part of the National Research Data Conference. This recognition, awarded by the Ministry of Higher Education, Research, and Space, rewards the commitment of a small group from the SADAPT unit composed of Philippe Martin, Baptiste Girault, Yannick Joly, and Katia Lucchi.
A tool for agricultural areas
Faced with the complexity of agricultural data collected each year under the Common Agricultural Policy, RPG Explorer provides an innovative solution: transforming scattered parcel information into a clear and usable view of territorial dynamics. The software reconstructs the cultivation history of plots, revealing major changes such as the conversion of permanent grassland, the encroachment of urban areas on agricultural land, and varying degrees of diversification in crop succession. Designed to be accessible to agronomists without specific expertise in digital mapping, RPG Explorer answers the practical questions asked by those working in the field: how are cropping systems changing? Which areas are priorities for action? How can we best support agricultural transitions? Developed with the support of the French Office for Biodiversity, ADEME, INRAE, and Labex BASC (Université Paris-Saclay), this free tool puts the power of spatial analysis at the service of public agricultural and environmental policies.
AgroParisTech, a committed actor in open science
This distinction is fully in line with AgroParisTech’s commitment to open science. The institution is developing a proactive policy aimed at making research methods and results accessible to as many people as possible, thereby promoting their reuse and impact on society. Through projects such as RPG Explorer, AgroParisTech is actively contributing to the second National Plan for Open Science and demonstrating that sharing scientific knowledge and tools is essential to meeting the challenges of ecological and agricultural transition.
