Selected good practices for the 2007-2008 campaign

Given our constraints we have selected only a few practices to reduce energy consumption and/or greenhouse gases emissions. Indeed, some practices require further studies (the setting up of a methanization unit for example) or are not feasible in our system (pedoclimatic context, material equipment).

Therefore for the short-term, we have selected :

Development of grazing for heifers and dry cows. >>> Read the article about increasing grazing.

Development of alfalfa surfaces. The two first cuts provide hay and the field can be pastured by ewes in Fall. >>> Read about the development of alfalfa.

Increase in non ploughed surfaces

Increase in milk production per cow, in order to limit the global needs of the herd.>>> Read the article about increasing production level.

The development of new fodder crop, such as meteil silage, seems interesting for animals with low needs. However the harvesting method is an issue. Harvest is indeed a critical step to make this fodder successful. We are also studying the opportunity of methanizing liquid and solid manure. This was the topic of an internship in 2007, and led to a thorough study in 2008 and 2009. >>> Reach the methanization part.

Using nitrification inhibitors for nitrogen fertilizers could also be interesting and was tested during the campaign 2008-2009.
