Taking up the environmental challenge

This section presents the studies that are made and the actions that are taken at the Grignon farm in order to reduce the greenhouse gas emissions and fossile fuel consumptions.

You will find in this section:

> Greenhouse gas emissions and fossile fuel consumption monitoring

The incertitude owing to greenhouse gas emissions of crops and cattle noticed at the time of the assessment of the Grignon farm in 2006 motivated us to invest in measuring tools.

> Cattle management changes

At Grignon, around 32% of the greenhouse gas emissions come from cattle breeding (ovine and bovine). That is the reason why we pay much attention on these activities and implement new techniques to try to reduce their impacts.

> Crop management changes

In Grignon, 29% of the greenhouse gas emissions and of the fossile fuel consumptions come from crops. Since 2006, year of the farm environmental assessment, we have been implementing many new practices to lower these impacts.

> Agricultural waste management

Manure, whey... A lot of by-products or agricultural waste can be used on the farm. In this section you will find details about means to use agricultural waste as well as analysis of the advantages and drawbacks of these technics.

> Low input Energetic Crops study

The objective of this part of the project is to study the possibility to develop low input energetic crops. We want to focus on the economic and environmental efficiency of these crops, particularly in the region « Ile de France » (Paris and its suburb). That is the reason why in 2008 three hectares of switchgrass and miscanthus have been (...)

> Energy use reduction to transform milk

The dairy is an important fossile fuel consumption item on the farm. That is the reason why we are exploring means that may help to cut down this impact.
